Mo'Kalamity

The show

After more than three years of touring in France and abroad with her band The Wizards, Mo'Kalamity flew to Jamaica in the spring of 2017. Accompanied by legendary reggae musicians and producers Sly & Robbie, she recorded her new album at Anchor Studio in Kingston. Recorded in the purest Jamaican live tradition, these nine new tracks are the result of an artistic collaboration with Sly & Robbie, who took her music exactly where Mo' envisioned it. On the same wavelength as the singer, the Grammy-nominated Jamaican duo arranged and embellished these new songs with all the genius they have demonstrated for decades… all recorded live in one take, the old-school way! Mo'Kalamity thus returns with a very personal fourth album, since, as with her previous albums, she wrote and composed the majority of the tracks (two instrumentals were composed by Sly & Robbie).

The artist

MO'KALAMITY Her first single was called "Africa." A fitting symbol for this Cape Verdean native who grew up in the Paris region. Inspired by Caribbean and African-American music, reggae came naturally to her. A self-taught musician, Mo'Kalamity formed her own band, The Wizards, in 2004. Her first album, Warriors of Light, was released in 2007. Well-received, it was re-released in 2008. Mo' quickly made a name for herself in the predominantly male-dominated French reggae scene. Her smooth, melodious voice blends seamlessly with a rootsy, deep, and politically charged reggae sound. In 2011, she released her second album, Deeper Revolution, which earned her three nominations at the 2011 Cabo Verde Awards. Continuing her journey toward independence, Mo' released her third album, Freedom of the Soul, in the fall of 2013 on her label, Sofia Thea Records. Between spiritual lyrics and protest songs, the singer-songwriter calls for an "urgent awakening of consciences." After three years of concerts in France and abroad, Mo', accompanied by her loyal Wizards band, is attracting an ever-growing audience: sold-out shows in Paris (Cabaret Sauvage, Divan du Monde...), notable appearances in Bulgaria, at the legendary Glastonbury Festival (UK), on Réunion Island, as well as in Spain, Germany, Poland, Canada, Senegal, Ivory Coast... In early 2017, she flew to Jamaica. A "necessary" trip, to capture the energy of the reggae scene before beginning work on her next album. In Kingston, she met Sly & Robbie, the legendary duo of musicians and producers who are among her major influences, particularly for their collaborations with luminaries like Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaacs, and Jacob Miller. She recorded four tracks, arranged by the equally brilliant Robbie Lyn on keyboards, Dalton Browne and Mickey Chang on guitar, Dean Fraser on saxophone, and of course, Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass. Once back in Paris, Mo' had only one wish: to return to Kingston. A month later, it was done. Back at Anchor Studio, accompanied by Sly & Robbie, she recorded her new album, in the purest Jamaican live tradition. The result of an artistic encounter with the legendary, multi-Grammy-nominated duo, who knew exactly where she envisioned her music going. On the same wavelength as the singer, the Jamaican duo arranged and embellished these new tracks with all the genius they've displayed for decades... All recorded live in one take, the old-school way! This fourth album, "made in Jamaica," promises to be another deeply personal experience, as Mo'Kalamity, like all their previous albums, wrote and composed the majority of the tracks (two were composed by Sly & Robbie). "Mo'Kalamity meets Sly & Robbie - One Love Vibration" is available now.
