A high-energy Gypsy atmosphere: While their fathers are away on a trip, Octave, son of Argante, and Léandre, son of Géronte, have both fallen in love: Octave with Hyacinte, a poor girl of unknown birth whom he has just married, and Léandre with the "young Egyptian" Zerbinette. Upon Argante's return, Octave, deeply worried about his father's reaction to the news of his marriage and, moreover, desperately short of money, begs Scapin, Léandre's valet, for help. But this "skillful craftsman of schemes and intrigues" is unable to sway the old man. Thus begins a series of mishaps and misunderstandings!
